I'm Lucie, and I am the creator of Barefoot Seaglass Jewellery!

I began this journey in Alderney, the Northern-most Island of the Channel Islands, about 8 years ago. Whilst taking walks in my lunch breaks I soon discovered that certain beaches on the island offered up some gorgeous pieces of seaglass; the best I had ever seen!

The stunning colours captured my imagination and thoughts quickly turned to how I could make simple but stunning jewellery out of these little Sea-made-gems.

The unusual thing about me is that during the summers of 2018 and 2019, I lived on a sailing yacht, called Ragtime, with my fiancee Jake.

We began our sailing adventure together in June 2018, starting in Alderney and working our way down the Spanish and Portugese coasts, eventually ending up in the Mediterranean.

Obviously I couldn't leave my jewellery behind, so Jake made a portable Jewellery bench for me one Christmas so I could design and create jewellery on the boat! I ended up selling a few pieces along the way and managed to get my jewellery into a seafront shop in Port de Soller in Summer 2019.

Now we are back in Alderney, due Covid-19 putting a stop to our sailing plans. Ragtime came back home to Alderney, until very sadly she decided to break her mooring lines in 2022 and ran aground. Thankfully no one was hurt, but our beloved Ragtime is now no more.

Now we are embarking on a different adventure, in building our own house on Alderney and are now parents to our gorgeous little boy.

What is Seaglass?

Seaglass, often referred to as 'Mermaid's Tears', is glass that was discarded or lost in the sea a long time ago. It spends years being tumbled and smoothed by Seawater, rocks and sand until one day it lands on a pebbly beach.

Seaglass' appearance is not that of your usual shards of glass, but like a smoothed and brightly coloured pebble! A defining characteristic of Seaglass are the 'c' shaped pitts which have been bashed into the glass by rocks over time.

Colours can be varied; white, brown and green are among the most common colours whilst red, pink and yellow are the rarest. On Alderney I tend to find a lot of Seafoam green Seaglass, which is most likely to have originated from an old Coca-Cola bottle tossed into the sea years ago.

What I love about seaglass is the story that could come with each piece. For example, a cobalt blue piece of glass could have come from a poison bottle! Or a brown piece could have been from a Pirate's last bottle of rum before he was made to walk the plank....

I think that Seaglass has a kind of magic and mystery to it; who knows where or even when it came from? Who was the last person to see it as a whole piece of glassware?
